CROSS LAY
A cross lay construction is one in which the wires in successive layers of the strand are spun approximately the same angle of lay. It follows that the wires in successive layers make point contact. Where ropes are operating over pulleys, nicking of wires and secondary bending at these points of contact occur, and failure of the wires by early fatigue may result.
